Apostille countries: which accept an Indian apostille?
The Hague Apostille Convention has 130 parties, and an MEA apostille works in almost all of them, with a few exceptions such as Germany. Type your destination to check in a second.
India is also a party, so it is not listed. For a few countries, other members objected to their joining, so the Convention may not apply between every pair. We confirm this for your case.
Countries outside the Convention do not accept an apostille. Your document needs MEA attestation, followed by attestation at that country’s embassy or consulate in India.
The Apostille Convention has 130 contracting parties, according to the HCCH status table updated 30 June 2026. India is one of them, so an MEA apostille works in the other 129, except where an objection applies: Germany does not accept Indian apostilles, and India has objected to China and Kosovo.
No. Germany objected to India joining the Convention. German authorities verify Indian documents case by case instead, through the German missions in India.
No. Documents for the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait need MEA attestation followed by embassy attestation instead of an apostille.
The Convention applies to Hong Kong and Macao through China, and India has objected to China joining. Confirm with the receiving authority before you apply; we can help you check.
Recent members include Canada, Saudi Arabia, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand and Viet Nam. Always check the current HCCH list before you apply, as membership changes.
