Why you need a birth certificate apostille

Embassies, universities and immigration offices outside India accept an Indian birth certificate only when it carries an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The apostille confirms that the signature and seal on your certificate are genuine, so the receiving country does not ask for any further embassy legalisation.

Before the MEA will apostille it, the certificate has to be verified by the state. For certificates issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or another Maharashtra registrar, that usually means attestation by the Home Department at Mantralaya. Certificates issued in other states normally go through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). We confirm the right route from a photo before we collect anything.

Timeline and cost

How long does a birth certificate apostille take?

The Home Department or SDM attestation is usually the longest stage. Once that is done, the MEA apostille follows quickly. Most birth certificates collected in Mumbai are ready in as little as 5 working days; very old or damaged certificates can take longer if a fresh copy is needed first.

What affects the cost?

The cost of a birth certificate apostille depends on the attestation route (Home Department or SDM), how many copies you need apostilled and whether you want doorstep pickup outside Mumbai. Government fees are included in the single quote we send you before collection.

Birth certificate apostille: your questions

More answers in our apostille FAQ and the document apostille guide.

No. Only a birth certificate issued by a government registrar, such as the municipal corporation, is a public document that can be apostilled. A hospital discharge card or birth record is not accepted.

The apostille is attached to the certificate exactly as it was issued. Many countries also ask for a certified translation, so check the receiving authority’s checklist. We can tell you what is commonly asked for your destination.

Most birth certificates are ready in as little as 5 working days after we collect them. The exact time depends on the attestation office’s workload, and we keep you updated at every stage.

The apostille itself has no expiry date. Some foreign authorities, however, only accept certificates that were issued or apostilled recently, so check their rules before you apply.
